IFS MISSION
The International Ferrocement Society (IFS) is a learned non-profit organization dedicated to the whole spectrum of knowledge on ferrocement. It strives to: 1) be a repository for all existing information on ferrocement and make it easily accessible to the public; 2) play the role of main hub for knowledge transfer on all aspects of ferrocement development including materials, analysis, design, construction, repair, technical standards, and educational resources; 3) promote scientific collaboration worldwide on ferrocement and related thin reinforced cement composites products; 4) support the development and distribution of consensus-based standards, guidelines and codes on ferrocement; 5) encourage the creation of related new technical information when missing or needed; and 6) support the organization of international symposia on ferrocement once every three to four years.
Definition of Ferrocement: Committee 549 of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) defines ferrocement as follows:
“Ferrocement is a type of thin wall reinforced concrete constructed of hydraulic cement mortar, reinforced with closely spaced layers of continuous and relatively small size wire mesh. The mesh may be made of metallic or other suitable materials.”
In his book on ferrocement, Naaman added the following qualifier to the above definition:
The fineness of the mortar matrix and its composition should be compatible with the mesh and armature system it is meant to encapsulate. The matrix may contain discontinuous fibers.
Important Note: a distinction should be made between Ferrocement as defined above, which must satisfy minimum requirements for mesh reinforcement content, distribution within the section, and specific surface, versus lightly reinforced cement mortar or stucco often containing only one layer of reinforcement.
